Shaft Deflection Sheave Replacement

At Fortis, safety, precision, and efficiency are at the core of every project we undertake. Our recent collaboration with a valued client showcased these principles as we executed the seamless replacement of two sets of 30,000lb deflection sheaves that measured 14 feet in diameter on two independent tower-mounted Koepe hoist systems. Here’s a closer look at how our team successfully completed this project.

The project began with an in-depth planning phase where Fortis’ experienced engineers developed a comprehensive safe work procedure for both the removal and installation of the sheave sets. This planning period led to the design of a specialized chairing structure for both head ropes and the sheave sets. These structures ensured that the hoisting ropes and conveyances were securely supported during the entire procedure, a critical element given the complexity of the task. The specialized chairing structures were entirely designed and manufactured by Fortis.

One of the more challenging aspects of this replacement was the limited overhead clearance in the working area. With precision, the Fortis team successfully removed the existing sheaves, and new sheaves were installed. Along with this upgrade, new sheave shafts and bearings were also installed, ensuring the longevity of the customer’s hoists and increasing their reliability. The Fortis commissioning team and our client representatives ensured the installation met the manufacturer’s specifications.
