This level of quality is obtained through the implementation of a system of procedures that demonstrates compliance with existing customers, potential customers, and independent auditing authorities.

Occupational Health & Safety Policy

At every level, Fortis employees are required to comply with the Acts, Regulations and established safe work practices and procedures as they apply. All personnel are expected to take active participation in their own safety as well as the safety of others.

Safety is a partnership wherein the Company and the employee are both responsible for one another and accountable to one another. The success of the Fortis safety program relies not only on a commitment from management to provide a safe work environment, but on the individual commitment of each employee to keep that workplace safe and uphold safe values. A serious safety attitude is the key contribution which employees must make to reduce the risks of injury and promote a safety conscious environment. Fortis management will undertake the necessary actions, as far as reasonably practicable to ensure both regulations and standards are not only met but exceeded wherever possible.

Fortis is committed to continuously monitor, audit and improve the health and safety program in order to achieve an injury free workplace. No matter the outcome, the Health and Safety Program always can, and will, be improved in an effort to be proactive as opposed to reactive. Workers are also made aware of their rights to know, participate, and refuse ongoingly, and are encouraged to stop work and reevaluate if they ever feel like those rights are being infringed upon.

Continuous improvement of the Occupational Health and Safety Program will be carried out in consideration of the following:

  • Hazards are to be analyzed, and risks controlled prior to starting any work.
  • Ensuring all personnel understand the potential risk(s) associated with their work.
  • Ensuring competent, well-trained personnel are assigned to every task.
  • Every employee has the authority to stop work if they encounter anything unsafe or if conditions change.
  • All incidents and near misses are to be reported.
  • Involvement of the OHC in matters of health and safety.
  • Ensuring all required inspections are completed on work areas and equipment alike.
  • Encouraging the bringing forth of safety concerns without fear of reprisal.
  • Using value added metrics that reflect the performance of the health and safety program.
  • Working in a spirit of consultation and cooperation throughout all levels of employment within the Company.

Environmental Policy

Fortis is committed to reducing the impact of its activities on the environment and assisting our customers by encouraging them to use sustainable resources. To this end Fortis has implemented an Environmental Management Program to continuously improve its environmental performance. To meet this commitment, Fortis will pursue the following:

  • Controlling the potential release of contaminants into streams and/or sewer systems using double-walled storage vessels and/or secondary containment where applicable.
  • Prevent the release of toxic substances during the disposal of certain chemicals by following manufacturer’s disposal recommendations and/or the disposal guidelines in the SDS for the product.
  • Protect archaeological discoveries that occur during any excavation processes by contacting archeological resource management or other relevant authorities when performing work in any heritage sensitive areas.
  • Minimize the destruction of natural habitat, open spaces, and wilderness resultin from Fortis’s operations and employee conduct by encouraging and providing suitable recycling facilities, minimizing use of single use plastics, using only energy efficient appliances, among other strategies.
  • Minimize construction and hazardous waste material working with the waste disposal contractor to monitor waste throughput, and work to segregate waste more carefully over time to reduce the amount of burden on local landfills.
  • Promote the use of renewable resources.
  • Reduce use of non-renewable resources through efficient use and planning.
  • Promote reuse of supplies such as safety glasses, hard hats, gloves, etc.
  • Enforcing the requirements of this plan and enforcing them with consistency.

Environmental risks will be evaluated based on the likelihood of their occurrence and the potential gravity of their impact. These two dimensions are factored together to generate an overall risk rating that will be used to establish a priority ranking.

Likewise, opportunities for environmental improvement will be evaluated based on the likelihood or ease with which a control could be implemented multiplied by the gravity of its benefit on environmental performance to determine how funds, resources, and personnel will be allocated to their implementation.

Fortis will promote environmental awareness to its workforce, customers, and suppliers. Fortis is committed to operating its Environmental Management System in a manner that attains and sustains compliance with the International Environmental Management System Standard ISO 14001.
